TV Review: Face Off

TV Review Face Off

TV, movies and makeup are just about all of my favourite things. So what if I told you that there's a TV show out there that is all about movie makeup? If you're anything like me then you know you're gonna be hooked without even watching a trailer.

Face Off is a programme that airs regularly in the US, and which follows the standard reality-TV contest game show prototype. Think of it as GBBO, except instead of frosting you've got fake blood and instead of Mary Berry you've got some scary looking men with facial piercings. The challenge each week is to create an artistic makeup masterpiece, following a set theme, and every week the person responsible for the least skilled look is sent home. It's not all about the gore and Halloween makeup (although don't get me wrong, a lot of it is); some episodes ask contestants to embody a particular art movement through makeup, or create ethereal goddesses using prosthetics and an air brush. The contestants they select are almost all semi-, if not fully, professional, so all of the work they design and create is astoundingly good, and happily enough you know there's never going to be a dull episode.

It is rather melodramatic (expect many long pauses and 'Coming Up Next' clips of people tearing their hair out), but that's something I'm willing to overlook in order to see some ridiculously impressive artistry. Unfortunately it's pretty tricky to catch it airing in the UK, but there's plenty of links for it out there online. It's just about to finish its 7th season over in the US, meaning there are a tonne of episodes for you to get your prosthetic teeth into.

Have you seen Face Off? Does it sound like something you'd enjoy?
